Swim for Life, Not Just for Their Lives

Swim Gym at the MBJCC offers private lessons and group classes for swimmers of all ages — from infants through senior citizens. Swim Gym’s philosophy is that swimming is a lifestyle and a vehicle for health and fitness: students will learn to swim for life, not just swim for their lives. Every instructor is trained with Swim Gym’s innovative teaching approach and cutting-edge techniques, beginning with a curriculum that focuses on gymnastics, fitness, flexibility, and comfort in the water before slowly refining technique. Regardless of age or ability, everyone walks away with water safety, fitness, and fun. Private lessons offer a one-swimmer-to-one-teacher ratio for those looking to accelerate the learning process, while group classes provide a social, structured environment for swimmers at every level.

Swim Gym Levels at the MBJCC

All swimmers are placed at the appropriate level by our Swim Gym instructors. The Swim Gym curriculum progresses from water comfort and safety foundations through to advanced stroke technique and competitive readiness. Both private and group lesson formats are available at all levels.

Parent & Me

For infants and toddlers accompanied by a parent or caregiver. This introductory class focuses on water comfort, basic water safety, and playful movement in the water — building a foundation of confidence and joy in the pool from the very earliest age.

Level 1 — Water Discovery

Introduction to the water for young beginners. Students focus on entering and exiting the pool safely, blowing bubbles, and basic water comfort and body position. This level establishes the foundation for all future swimming skills.

Level 2 — Water Exploration

Building on Level 1, students begin to develop independent movement in the water, including assisted floating, kicking, and arm movements. Water comfort continues to deepen as students gain confidence away from the wall.

Level 3 — Water Stamina

Students at this level develop independent floating, basic freestyle arm stroke with rotary breathing, and back float. Underwater exploration and increased comfort with submersion are introduced at this stage.

Level 4 — Stroke Introduction

Introduction to structured freestyle technique with rotary breathing, elementary backstroke, and breaststroke kick. Students begin to develop proper body alignment and coordination across multiple strokes.

Level 5 — Stroke Development

Students refine and build on all four competitive strokes — freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Endurance swimming over longer distances is introduced alongside continued technique refinement.

Level 6 — Stroke Mechanics

Focus on stroke mechanics, turns, and starts. Students improve stroke efficiency and begin to develop competitive swimming fundamentals including flip turns and dive entries.

Level 7 — Advanced Stroke Development

Advanced technique training across all four strokes with an emphasis on efficiency, power, and endurance. Students are introduced to more complex turns, pace awareness, and competitive event preparation.

Level 8 — Fitness Swimmer

For swimmers who have mastered all four strokes and are developing fitness-level swimming. Training focuses on endurance, interval training, and conditioning — ideal for swimmers who want to maintain and improve their fitness through swimming.

Level 9 — Advanced Fitness Swimmer

Advanced fitness swimming with structured workouts, increased yardage, and technique refinement across all strokes. Students at this level are swimming with strong independence, endurance, and competitive awareness.

Level 10 — Pre-Team

Designed for swimmers ready to transition into competitive swimming. Pre-Team focuses on race preparation, stroke efficiency, turns, starts, and the competitive fundamentals needed to join the MBJCC Swim Team.
