SUMMARY:The American Ashkenazi Experience – Impacts of Yiddish Children’s Literature
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\nCome learn how Yiddish children’s literature shapes our modern Jewish world with Miriam Udel! \nModern Jewish Worldmaking Through Yiddish Children’s Literature \nJoin us on Monday\, Dec 9 at 7:30PM at the Miami Beach JCC for an evening with Miriam Udel\, discussing her latest book on the overlooked world of Yiddish children’s literature and what it reveals about modern Jewish life. Written with warmth and insight\, the book reframes stories of childhood\, migration\, and resilience—offering striking echoes for our own time. \n🎟 Free & open to the public — RSVP recommended. \nABOUT THE BOOK: \nWritten in an accessible and humane way\, the book considers the neglected corpus of literature written for children in Yiddish during the twentieth century as a new archive for reexamining the modern Ashkenazi experience\, especially during the twentieth century. The book grapples with changes in family life and our understanding of childhood\, alongside Jewish experiences of migration and the need to confront antisemitic violence. Because we all walk around now wondering which year of the 1930’s we’re currently living in\, the book offers a lot of contemporary resonance. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \nMIRIAM UDEL is Judith London Evans Director of the Tam Institute of Jewish Studies and associate professor of Yiddish language\, literature\, and culture at Emory University\, where she studies the Jewish encounter with modernity. She holds an AB in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and a PhD in Comparative Literature\, both from Harvard University. Her academic research interests include 20th-century Yiddish literature and culture\, Jewish children’s literature\, American-Jewish literature\, and genre studies. She is also the author of Never Better!: The Modern Jewish Picaresque (University of Michigan Press\, 2016)\, winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book Award in Modern Jewish Thought and Experience\, and Honey on the Page: A Treasury of Yiddish Children’s Literature (NYU Press\, 2021). Udel was ordained in 2019 as part of the first cohort of the Executive Ordination Track at Yeshivat Maharat\, a program designed to bring qualified mid-career women into the Orthodox rabbinate.

SUMMARY:Matchmaking 2 - Israeli Film Series
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\nOn Monday\, December 15\, 7:30 pm\, step into the world of love\, laughter\, and a touch of mischief with Israel’s biggest box office hit of the year\, Matchmaking 2\, the long-awaited sequel to Erez Tadmor’s beloved 2022 romance that took the world by storm. Full of joy\, warmth\, and the ultimate romantic entanglements\, this refreshing and feel-good romantic drama returns to the charming world of Orthodox Jewish dating\, telling a heartfelt and humorous tale of tradition\, family\, and finding love in the most unexpected places. \nThe spotlight now shines on Baruch (Maor Schwitzer\, from the internationally acclaimed show Shtisel and also at the Festival with Air War)\, an endearing bachelor who’s no longer the fresh-faced groom hopeful\, but still holding out for his perfect match. In the pressure cooker of Haredi matchmaking\, men and women alike are urged to settle down\, and Baruch’s vibrant\, tough-love matchmaker\, Malki (Irit Kaplan from beloved Israeli show The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem and Academy Award entry Foxtrot)\, won’t let him off the hook just yet. \nEndlessly witty\, visually rapturous\, and sweetly romantic\, Matchmaking 2 is a Romeo and Juliet-like saga (sans the tragedy!) of two young\, eligible ultra-Orthodox singles looking for a match. But it isn’t just about finding love\, it’s a tender\, side-splitting celebration of clashing traditions and big-hearted characters\, starring some of Israel’s most dazzling young talents. \nThe Israeli Film Series is presented in partnership with The Miami Jewish Film Festival and generously sponsored by South Pointe Tavern.

SUMMARY:Forgiveness - Israeli Film Series
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\nJoin us for the Israeli Film Series Screening of Forgiveness\, on Monday\, January 5\, 7:30 PM. \nGuy Amir and Hanan Savyon\, the acclaimed writers and stars behind Israeli smash-hits Asfur\, Ma Bakarish\, and MJFF 2018 acclaimed film Maktub (one of the biggest box office hits in Israeli history!)\, return to the big screen with this resoundingly fun and warm-hearted caper comedy. Set during the Days of Awe in a small town in southern Israel\, Guy and Hanan play two friends\, Nissan and Shaul\, who are bumbling thieves that are hilariously and desperately attempting to pull off a heist. While Nissan flees abroad\, Shaul is caught and sent to prison. Featuring an all-star cast including Alon Aboutboul (The Band’s Visit)\, Noa Koler (also in the Festival with The Conductor)\, and Tsahi Halevi (also in the Festival with Mossad)\, Forgiveness tells the crowd-pleasing story of what happens when Shaul is released and goes home to seek forgiveness from his wife\, while Nissan comes back to Israel as a newly observant Jew also asking forgiveness from his friend. \nThe Israeli Film Series is presented in partnership with The Miami Jewish Film Festival and generously sponsored by South Pointe Tavern.
