SUMMARY:Art Exhibition Opening - The Art of Letters: Journey into Being
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Schwartz-Jacob Gallery -for the opening reception of “The Art of Letters: Journey into Being\,” on Thursday\, February 27th at 7:30 pm\, featuring the work of artist Igal Fedida. This event is free and open to the community. \nA visionary series by Igal Fedida\, exploring the profound connection between the spiritual\, material\, and transformative power of language. Inspired by the sacred wisdom of letters\, particularly the Hebrew alphabet\, the series views letters as elements of creation\, carriers of divine energy\, and bridges between the finite and infinite. Each piece invites reflection on personal and collective journeys into existence and self-discovery. Crafted with materials like wood\, metals\, resin\, and pigments\, the artworks embody a tactile and layered storytelling approach. These materials symbolize the interplay of physical and spiritual dimensions\, evoking contrasts and harmonies in life. Rich with symbolic imagery—Hebrew letters\, geometric patterns\, organic textures\, and flowing lines—the series expresses themes of unity\, transformation\, and the eternal cycle of being. Through The Art of Letters: Journey into Being\, Fedida offers a profound meditation on communication\, intention\, and the unifying language of art. This collection celebrates the creative process and invites viewers to explore deeper connections between identity\, spirituality\, and the infinite possibilities within letters\, symbols\, and human experience.

SUMMARY:In Conversation With Adam Nimoy - The Most Human
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, March 4\, 2025 at 7:30 PM for an engaging and transformative evening for a conversation with Adam Nimoy\, son of Leonard Nimoy\, on his moving memoir. \nIn his memoir\, The Most Human\, Adam Nimoy details his life as the son of one of the most recognizable actors of our time. Nimoy\, too\, was caught between two worlds: there was the perceived perfect family of acclaimed actor Leonard Nimoy\, and there was Nimoy’s own reality of a conflicted home life. While a similar memoir might be advertised as a “tell-all” about a public figure\, Nimoy takes care to be as fair as possible to his father\, the other important people in his life\, and himself. He describes his childhood during the era of Star Trek\, his career shifts\, his experience starting his own family\, and his recovery from addiction. \nA book signing will follow after the event. \nIn the end\, Leonard and Adam Nimoy were able to reconcile in their own ways: Nimoy learned to let go of resentment\, and his father made an effort to support his son during a difficult and emotional time. Featuring Jewish themes and biblical allusions to the Akedah (Binding of Isaac) and Jonah and the Whale\, The Most Human describes the ever-changing nature of parent-child relationships — both in and out of the spotlight. The book reminds us that our relationships are always going to be complicated\, but that does not negate their significance in our lives. It reminds us that\, though we might struggle to admit it\, our parents are just as human as we are. \nAdam Nimoy is a graduate of UC Berkeley and Loyola Law School. He left the practice of law to pursue a directing career in network television. He directed the critically acclaimed film about his father For the Love of Spock.

SUMMARY:Savoy - Israeli Film Series
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Miami Beach JCC’s Israeli Film Series screening of the movie – Savoy- on Monday\, March 10 at 7:30 pm. \nA young housewife becomes a fearless hostage mediator\, only to be defamed\, in this gripping tale of a Tel Aviv terrorist siege. On a deadly March 1975 night\, PLO gunmen enter the Savoy Hotel\, seizing hostages and demanding release of Palestinian prisoners. Among the captives is Kochava Levy\, a young woman of Yemini descent\, whose fluency in Arabic allowed her to relay messages between IDF negotiators and the terrorists. New archival material\, riveting reenactments\, and stunning direction and editing bolster Dana Ivgy’s sympathetic yet complex portrayal of the heroine who used language and humanity to connect with the enemy.

SUMMARY:FL JCC Virtual Author Event - Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our virtual FL JCC Author Series with Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove\, For Such a Time as This; On Being Jewish Today. \nThe attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7 has drawn a clear and irreversible demarcation in time. The Jewish community woke to an unrecognizable new reality on the 7th\, witnessing first the horror and sheer brutality of the atrocities in Israel\, followed immediately by the stark and unprecedented rise in antisemitism in its aftermath. \nKnitting together storytelling with ancient teachings\, Rabbi Cosgrove helps navigate the landscape of this new reality and understand how we got here\, where we are today\, and where we might go from here. For Such a Time as This is a guide for a new generation that is reconciling the past with the present and facing the unknown future with courage\, spirit\, and unwavering hope. \nRabbi Elliot J. Cosgrove\, Ph.D.\, is a leading voice in the Conservative Jewish Movement\, and a preeminent spiritual guide and thought leader. The Rabbi of Park Avenue Synagogue since 2008\, he was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1999 and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago Divinity School.

SUMMARY:An Israeli perspective on Bioethical Dilemmas with Prof. Ravitsky
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to invite you to a thought-provoking discussion on the intersection of cultural values and bioethical dilemmas\, with a focus on Israel. \nHow do cultural values shape bioethical dilemmas?\nThis talk will explore how Israel\, as a Jewish-democratic state\, has addressed several bioethical challenges through its policy-making\, taking into account historical\, cultural\, and religious perspectives. She is a Full Professor at the Bioethics Program\, School of Public Health\, University of Montreal and Senior Lecturer on Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. SUMMARY:Julie Satow - Literary Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Best-selling author Julie Satow will talk about her latest book\, When Women Ran 5th Avenue at the JCC’s Literary Luncheon on Wednesday\, March 19 at 12:30 PM. \nIn When Women Ran Fifth Avenue\, award-winning journalist and author of The Plaza Julie Satow chronicles the rise of the department store through dazzling portraits of three visionary women who took great risks\, forging new paths for the women who followed in their footsteps. This stylish account\, rich with personal drama and trade secrets\, captures the department store in all its glitz\, decadence\, and fun\, and showcases the women who made that beautifully curated world go round. \nThis history of American fashion and the department store is inextricable from Jewish history\, from the Jewish immigrants who worked in New York’s Garment District to influential designers and creators like Hattie Carnegie and Lena Himmelstein (better known as the creator of Lane Bryant). These stories are interwoven throughout Satow’s glittering account of a bygone era of innovation and glamour. \nJulie Satow is an award-winning journalist and the author of The Plaza\, a New York Times Editor’s Choice and NPR Favorite Book of 2019. She is a regular contributor to The New York Times.

SUMMARY:FL JCC Virtual Author Event - Ilan Troen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our virtual FL JCC Author Series with Ilan Troen\, Israel/Palestine in World Religions: Whose Promised Land?. \nA leading scholar in Israel studies\, S. Ilan Troen has written an introduction to the religious significance of Israel\, updated and rededicated in memory of the horrific events of October 7\, 2023. His work reminds us that there are competing theologies defining the conflict. This complexity is magnified by the fact that three faith communities\, as opposed to two in other contested areas like Cyprus\, Ireland\, and the Indian subcontinent\, understand the Land of Israel to be central to their identity. Troen\, the founding director of the Israel studies departments at both Ben Gurion and Brandeis University\, suggests that religious justifications for ownership of the Land of Israel have not disappeared\, despite the rising secularism of the modern age. He claims that the secular and religious components “may be maintained simultaneously and are often interwoven.” \nS. Ilan Troen is Lopin Professor of Modern History\, emeritus at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev\, Israel\, Stoll Family Professor in Israel Studies\, emeritus at Brandeis University\, USA\, and founding director of the Israel Studies centers at both institutions. He is Founding Editor of the journal Israel Studies\, and 2023 recipient of the Association for Israel Studies “Lifetime Achievement Award.”

DESCRIPTION:The concluding luncheon for our Barbara Eisenberg Literary Luncheon Series is with best-selling author Talia Carner who will be presenting about her latest historical novel – The Boy With the Star Tattoo on Wednesday\, April 9 at 12:20 pm. \nThis is an epic historical novel of ingenuity and courage\, of love and loss\, spanning postwar France when Israeli agents roamed the countryside to rescue hidden Jewish orphans—to the 1969 daring escape of the Israeli boats of Cherbourg. \nNovelist Talia Carner has authored six historical and psychological suspense novels that shed light on social indignities and unexplored historical events. Both The Boy With The Star Tattoo and The Third Daughter were named Finalists by the Jewish Book Council in the Book Club Categories. Formerly the publisher of Savvy Woman magazine and a lecturer at international women’s economic forums\, Carner turned from trailblazing projects centered on women’s issues to fighting for Israel’s image. SUMMARY:Margalit Fox - Literary Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Best-selling author Margalit Fox will talk about her latest book\, The Talented Mrs. Mandelbaum at the JCC’s Literary Luncheon on Wednesday\, April 9 at 12:30 PM. \nTabloid sensation Fredericka Mandelbaum headed her own crime syndicate in New York City from the 1870s onward\, specializing in “fencing” stolen properties and financing bank burglaries. A penniless immigrant barely twenty years earlier\, Mrs. Mandelbaum entertained a varied crowd at her dining table: politicians and police\, upper-class business leaders and their fashionable wives\, and some of her tonier underworld accomplices. She was a Jewish wife and mother and reportedly an enthusiastic member of her local synagogue. \nAfter being immersed in Mrs. Mandelbaum’s life and times\, readers may decide there’s really no need to explain her success; she was simply one of a kind. It’s a tribute to Fox’s storytelling talents that this unique and mysterious woman has come to life. \nMargalit Fox originally trained as a cellist and a linguist before pursuing journalism. As a senior writer in The New York Times’s Obituary News Department\, she wrote the front-page public sendoffs of some of the leading cultural figures of our age. Winner of the William Saroyan Prize for Literature and author of four previous books\, The Confidence Men\, Conan Doyle for the Defense\, The Riddle of the Labyrinth\, and Talking Hands\, Fox lives in Manhattan with her husband.

SUMMARY:Visages of Memory - Photography Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of a special exhibition opening\, Visages of Memory and a conversation with photographer and Holocaust survivor Laszlo Selly at the Miami Beach Regional Library on Thursday\, April 17th from 6:00-9:00 pm. The exhibition is part of the City of Miami Beach’s Culture Crawl evening. Laszlo will be in conversation at 7:00 pm. \nVisages of Memory\, by Holocaust Survivor Laszlo Selly\, captures the life experience and resilience of the Holocaust Survivors he photographs. Their stories are told through these powerful images. . \nPhotographer Laszlo Selly\, a Holocaust survivor himself\, captured the visages of fellow survivors as seen through his unique lens. \nThe photographs include survivors from Austria\, Czechoslovakia\, Germany\, Hungary\, Poland\, Romania\, and the Soviet Union. Each photograph represents a terrifying story of survival and escape from the Nazis and their eventual migration to the United States. \nThis exhibition is made possible with the support of the University of Miami\, Miami Beach JCC\, and the Holocaust Memorial. \nAbout the Photographer: \nLaszlo Selly and his twin brother were born in Budapest\, Hungary\, on December 31\, 1937\, into a middle-class\, secular Jewish family. When Laszlo was six years old\, he remembered his mother sewing a yellow star onto his outer garments. Desperate to keep their twins safe\, Laszlo’s parents made the difficult decision to send them into hiding. This plan led to danger\, and they returned to their parents. Laszlo’s father obtained a Raoul Wallenberg certificate of protection that allowed the family to move to a safe house. \nAfter liberation by the Soviets\, Laszlo and his twin brother completed their education in Hungary under intense Communist indoctrination. The brothers escaped from Hungary during the 1956 Revolution and made their way to New York where Laszlo became a successful photographer. Today\, he lives with his wife Gail in South Florida and regularly shares his story with students at the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach. \nThe exhibition is part of the Miami Dade Public Library System’s eightieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War\, a pivotal historical moment that continues to resonate profoundly in our global landscape. The Miami-Dade Public Library System proudly presents World War II at 80 – a year-long series honoring historical milestones. Enlightening panel discussions and presentations\, thought-provoking exhibits and book clubs\, along with other insightful events are planned throughout the year.
