SUMMARY:Comedy Night - Brad Zimmerman
DESCRIPTION:Brad Zimmerman\nMy Son The Waiter is Actor/Comedian Brad Zimmerman’s hilarious and inspiring story about the grit and passion required to ‘make it’ as an artist and the sweet rewards that come from never giving up on your dream. Specifically\, Brad moved to New York City and “temporarily” waited tables for 29 years\, while continuing to pursue his dream of comedic acting. He never gave up and many years later\, he’s opened for Joan Rivers\, Brad Garrett and the famed George Carlin and now has his own touring show that is as profound as it is entertaining. \nBrad Zimmerman is a very unique and original voice in the world of comedy. Watch a few minutes of his comedy and you will know you have never seen anything like Brad. \nHe works all over the country\, doing theatres\, comedy clubs\, casino’s\, country clubs\, comedy festivals\, JCC’s. I mean\, you name it\, he’s done it. He has worked with many well known comedians and entertainers such as Brad Garrett\, Dennis Miller\, Susie Essman\, Julio Iglesias\, and has been Joan Rivers’ opening act of choice for over seven years. In fact Joan has said\, “I’ve had three great opening acts in my lifetime: Billy Crystal\, Garry Shandling\, and Brad Zimmerman.” \nIn the year 2006\, Brad had the great honor of opening for George Carlin\, and that relationship lasted until George passed away in 2008. The first time Brad opened for George\, at the Paramount Theatre\, just outside Chicago\, right after finishing his act\, George approached Brad backstage\, and said\, as only George could have said\, “f**kin great!” \nBrad combines years of acting training and standup\, which is evident in Brad’s true pride and joy; his one man show. It is called\, “MY SON THE WAITER\, A JEWISH TRAGEDY\,” and he has been working on it since 2005. In this part standup/part theatrical piece Brad tells a story of one man’s lengthy\, and we do mean lengthy struggle to make it as an actor in New York. His send-ups on his childhood\, his family\, his misbegotten love life\, and his career are as warm and poignant as they are hysterical. He performed the show Off Broadway in New York City for 15 months\, and is now back on tour throughout the country. \nIn addition to this show\, Brad has done work in both television and film\, most notably playing Johnny Sack’s lawyer in one of the best television shows of all time\, “THE SOPRANOS.”

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Event: Jonathan Freedland- The Escape Artist
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Freedland’s superb writing fills the reader with rage\, despair\, and admiration for the stubborn resistance of the human spirit. It is heart-wrenching to read the story of Rudolf Vrba\, who is a mere nineteen years of age\, and his fellow concentration camp inmate Fred Wetzler\, who is twenty-six. It is the spring of 1944\, and the two young men are enduring a harrowing incarceration in Auschwitz when the extraordinary happens. Melding their minds and spirits\, they hatch an outrageous plan: They will be the first Jews ever to escape from the highly guarded prison. Once the world knows\, they are certain that steps will be taken to save the Jews in Europe.

SUMMARY:Special Film Screening: Ask Dr. Ruth
DESCRIPTION:Join us a very special tribute to Dr. Ruth Westheimer (1928-2024)\, with a screening of a fabulous documentary about her – “Ask Dr. Ruth.” \nFollowing the film presentation\, there will be a panel discussion featuring Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff\, Founder and Director of the Holocaust Teacher’s Institute; Dr. Nikki Freeman\, Education Director at the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach; and Danny Reed\, Cultural Arts Program Coordinator at the Miami Beach JCC. \nAsk. Dr. Ruth \nDirected by Ryan White \nUSA | 100 minutes | 2019 \nAlmost everyone knew America’s most famous sex therapist\, Dr. Ruth Westheimer. With her diminutive frame\, thick German accent\, and uninhibited approach to sex education\, Dr. Ruth revolutionized both public and private conversations around sexuality. But fewer people were aware of her early years as a Holocaust survivor and then a machine gunner in the Israeli army\, fighting during the Independence War. This delightful documentary is an affectionate tribute to a woman whose extraordinary impact on society is matched only by her remarkable life. For the first time\, her story is told with the poignancy and detail it deserves. \nThank you to the Miami Jewish Film Festival and the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach for co-sponsoring this program.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Sunday\, September\, 29\, 9:00 for a family friendly\, morning program on the MBJCC Sol Stern Dock as we use the kayaks and canoes of the Mariner Program to help keep the Indian Creek Waterway clean in a pre-High Holiday – Reverse Tashlich! Volunteers from the climate and environmental organization VolunteerCleanUp.org. \nBring your children and grandchildren! Lifeguards will be on duty. \nA donation of $18 per person is requested (children under 12 are free). MB JCC Lifeguards will be present. The symbolism is reversed: participants come together to clean up waterways that impact our lives\, fostering a spiritual connection to and stewardship for the environment.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Event: Normon H. Finklestein
DESCRIPTION:The first in a series of author events in conjunction with South Florida JCC’s. \nSaying No to Hate traces the history of American antisemitism and the Jewish community’s response. It offers us a deeper understanding of how events in America’s past have informed the meteoric rise in hatred and violence we see today. \nFinkelstein’s book is not just a narrative of oppression. It also shares how the American Jewish community\, through institutions such as the American Jewish Committee\, the ADL\, and Hillel\, have responded to Jewish hatred. Say No to Hate offers readers an accessible introduction to antisemitism in America. This is particularly important for a generation of Jews who\, until recently\, were shielded from the overt antisemitism that plagued Jewish Americans of years past. \nNorman H. (1941 – 2024) taught Jewish history at Hebrew College for more than thirty-five years and is the author of twenty-one nonfiction histories and biographies. Two of his books\, Heeding the Call and Forged in Freedom\, won National Jewish Book Awards.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition Opening - Hashivenu
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Monday\, October 14\, at 7:30 p.m. for the opening reception of “Hashivenu\,” a very special art exhibition at Miami Beach commemorating October 7 and dedicated to the resilience of Israel and the Jewish people. We will be honoring IDF veterans as well as the Loving Moms organization\, which does so much in the community to fight antisemitism and support the Hostages and Israel. \n“Hashivenu” means “return us.” The “us” is the Jewish people. It is a cry to be renewed while cultivating resilience. It is how the Jewish People have survived for thousands of years and how we will continue to do so. October 7th is firmly embedded in Jewish history as a day of unmitigated tragedy; what has resulted is an expression of “Hashivenu.”  This exhibition honors everyone – those who were murdered\, those who were kidnapped\, those who defend\, and those who renew. \nThis exhibition is made possible with the generous assistance of the Jewish Federations of North America. \nIlan Block is a New Jersey-born artist who creates meaningful and unique digital portraits and art that represent the entire range of the Jewish experience. \nLoving Moms is a Florida-based group of passionate women dedicated to promoting community engagement\, combating antisemitism\, raising awareness about the hostages\, and fostering a supportive environment for those affected.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Event: Binyamin Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our virtual FL JCC Author Series. \nThe Einstein Effect by Binyamin Cohoen shows all the ways\, 70 years after his death\, Albert Einstein’s influence is still with us today — in our systems and our culture. Interspersed between chapters on his long-lasting scientific legacy\, author Benyamin Cohen (the mind behind Einstein’s Twitter account!) also tells the story of how Einstein became an unlikely social media figure and pop culture icon in the modern age. \nBenyamin Cohen is the news director of The Forward\, and has a bizarre side job as Albert Einstein on social media\, where he has 20 million fans. He is the author of The Einstein Effect and My Jesus Year. He’s based in West Virginia\, where he lives with his wife\, three dogs\, a cat\, and a flock of chickens known as the Co-Hens.
