SUMMARY:Different Ships\, Same Boat artistic performance by Guy Mendilow Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Different Ships\, Same Boat\nWritten & Directed by: Regie Gibson & Guy Mendilow \nPerformed by: Regie Gibson (Host/narrator); Guy Mendilow (Host/narrator; piano\, voice\, guitar); Chris Baum (violin)\, Courtney Swain (Voice\, Keyboard\, Bass) \nDifferent Ships\, Same Boat is for audiences that crave an artistic performance of captivating music and stories drawn from real circumstances\, told from different perspectives and in often surprising ways. It is a moving\, well-crafted\, multifaceted experience connecting audiences to histories\, perspectives\, and experiences that may be both familiar and different from their own. \nPerformance Description \nThrough powerful spoken word\, music and song\, Different Ships\, Same Boat unfolds through a series of chapters — each curating moving\, real-world stories to explore a facet of the ways we risk\, live\, love and laugh. Literary performer Regie Gibson and composer/storycatcher Guy Mendilow introduce each chapter\, guiding audiences with podcast-like narration\, at turns humorous\, poignant or poetic\, over an evocative musical score. With stories from WWII Hungary to modern small towns and cities in the US\, along with music and song spanning lyrical American Blues to Ottoman Jewish cantigas in the endangered language of Ladino\, Different Ships\, Same Boat offers a stirring exploration of the joys\, tensions and complexities of who we are\, and who we wish to be\, to ourselves and to each other.

SUMMARY:Benji Lovitt - Israel 201
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an evening with Comedian\, Educator\, and Writer Benji Lovitt\, where he takes us on the journey through his new book – “Israel 201: Your Next-Level Guide to the Magic\, Mystery\, and Chaos of Life in the Holy Land” \nHow did Jerusalem’s cat problem spur religious debate? Why are Israelis so blunt\, even when the truth hurts? From shomer Shabbos car insurance policies and ancient marriage laws to Arab Israeli stand-up comedy\, Druze high schools\, and LGBTQ activism in the IDF\, Israel 201 goes beyond the typical introductory “101” course to show readers the real Israel\, behind the headlines. Based on the authors’ own experiences living in Israel for a combined twenty-five years and interviews with Israeli experts like Fauda co-creator Avi Issacharoff\, Olympian Yael Arad\, and others\, Israel 201 is a behind-the-scenes look at the magic\, mystery\, and\, yes\, the chaos of one of the most fascinating and least understood countries on earth. \nBenji Lovitt \nSince immigrating to Israel in 2006\, Texas-native Benji Lovitt has delivered stand-up comedy and cultural presentations for audiences around the world. His perspectives on Israeli society and cultural differences have been featured on Israeli television and radio and in media outlets such as USA Today\, BBC Radio\, Time Magazine\, The Atlantic\, and The Times of Israel. \nThis literary event was made possible with the generous support of the Jewish Book Council\, Books&Books\, and The Betsy Writers Room @thebetsyhotel

This directorial debut from prolific actor Lior Ashkenazi (also starring in MJFF’s opening night film Karaoke)\, features beloved Israeli comedians Guy Amir & Hanan Savyon (MJFF films Forgiveness and Maktub)\, quickly evolves into a wonderfully wicked ensemble piece that brings forth electric performances from each of the seven leads\, as their phones betray their deepest held secrets. Layer upon layer of lies\, unexpected betrayals\, and surprising twists abound in this searing\, dark dramedy. Perfect Strangers uncovers all the ways people hide their true nature\, even from those they claim to love the most\, and the elaborate web of secrets that they weave over time to conceal them.

DESCRIPTION:The Soap Myth by Jeff Cohen\n  \nAbout\nPresented by YILove Jewish\, the Miami Beach JCC is delighted to invite you to this series of Jewish themed play readings that we offer throughout the year. Our upcoming reading\, “The Soap Myth” by Jeff Cohen\, will be performed by the renowned local stage actor\, Avi Hoffman\, alongside a talented cast. \nPlay Synopsis\nSet more than fifty years post-WWII\, “The Soap Myth” delves deep into a young Jewish reporter’s quest for truth. He seeks answers to the haunting question – did the Nazis\, in their unspeakable cruelty\, manufacture soap from the corpses of their Jewish victims? The play paints a vivid picture\, juxtaposing survivors\, scholars\, and Holocaust deniers\, and compellingly poses the question: Who really gets to inscribe history? \n\n

SUMMARY:Sharing Decorating Secrets with Vicente Wolf
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special evening\, Wednesday\, November 1\, at 7:30 p.m. with the author of The Creative Interior Solutions. \nSharing Decorating Secrets with Vicente Wolf with an introduction and Q&A led by Karen Boyer\, founder of Elements in Play Fine Art Advisory \nThe Miami Beach JCC invites you to an engaging chat with interior design trailblazer\, Vicente Wolf. With nearly 50 years in the industry\, he will share myriad inspirations for his designs while walking you through client projects. Known for his relaxed\, elegant environments that incorporate one-of-a-kind pieces with antiques as well as objects found in his travels to remote parts of the world\, his designs maintain a fresh appeal that stands the test of time. From Cuban refugee to a successful designer\, Vicente will discuss personal tales of his experiences as well as design lessons covered in his new book\, CREATIVE INTERIOR SOLUTIONS (Rizzoli; April 2023)\, written by Margaret Russell\, former Editor in Chief of Architectural Digest with a foreword by Marianne Williamson\, a former client and presidential candidate. \nBook signing of his new book will follow the program. \nWhen Vicente Wolf left Cuba and landed in the United States in the 1960s\, he didn’t have a dime to his name or a plan for his life. But he did have an open mind\, a good sense of style\, and a willingness to work hard. \nWhen he discovered interior design in the 1970s\, there were kind mentors who helped him learn the business. In the decades since he’s had a distinguished design career spanning nearly five decades\, opened his VW Home showroom in New York\, written five books\, garnered all kinds of awards\, including having his name included on the AD100 list in 2016\, and earned the undeniable right to be referred to as a “legend.” \nKaren Boyer is a highly regarded art advisor and founder of Elements in Play Fine Art Advisory. She merges passion and strategy to elevate the collections of individuals and families\, ensuring their aesthetic\, financial\, and legacy goals are seamlessly met. Karen is based in Miami and covers the art market internationally. \nThis literary event was made possible with the generous support of Books & Books

SUMMARY:18 Days in October
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special evening at Temple Menorah to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Yom Kippur War with author Uri Kaufman\, who will present his book- 18 Days in October: The Yom Kippur War and How it Created the Modern Middle East. \nIsraeli Consul General Maor Elbaz Starinsky is a special guest for the evening. \nOctober 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War\, a conflict that shaped the modern Middle East. The War was a trauma for Israel and following the oil embargo\, a pivotal reordering of the global economic order. The Jewish State came shockingly close to defeat. A panicky cabinet meeting debated the use of nuclear weapons. After the war\, Prime Minister Golda Meir resigned in disgrace\, and a 9/11-style commission investigated the “debacle.” \nBut\, argues Uri Kaufman\, from the perspective of a half century\, the War can be seen as a pivotal victory for Israel. After nearly being routed\, the Israel Defense Forces clawed its way back to threaten Cairo and Damascus. In the War’s aftermath\, both sides had to accept unwelcome truths: Israel could no longer take military superiority for granted — but the Arabs could no longer hope to wipe Israel off the map. A straight line leads from the battlefields of 1973 to the Camp David Accords of 1978 and all the treaties since.
