SUMMARY:FL JCC Virtual Author Event - Diane Shader Smith
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our FL JCC’s Summer Virtual Author Series. \nMonday\, June 23 at 3:30 pm with Diane Shader Smith\, presenting Diary of a Dying Girl\, by Mallory Smith. \nSalt in My Soul is a testament to love\, determination\, and the healing power of memoir as medicine. It’s a classic coming of age story about a young woman named Mallory figuring out how to live fully while dying. In so doing\, she secretly documented her inner thoughts in her diary while throwing herself at life: friendships in elementary school\, boyfriends and sports teams in high school\, the little travel her disease would allow. She attended college and explored the wider world\, one that was just beyond her grasp. She became a devoted environmentalist\, seeing a startling and vivid metaphor for her declining health in the destruction of our world. All the while Mallory fought. And wrote; about her fears\, her loves\, her pain\, her depression\, her hopes\, and gave voice to the many millions who struggle with invisible or visible illness\, turning her pain into purpose. In Mallory’s final days\, her father uncovered a long-forgotten treatment that is now changing the world of medicine but\, heartbreakingly\, it came too late to save his daughter. \nMallory Smith \nMallory Smith was a writer and environmental journalist. A 2014 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University\, Mallory produced radio documentaries for Green Grid Radio and news features for NPR through KCRW. She played club volleyball for Stanford and was a three-sport varsity athlete in high school. Diary of a Dying Girl is adapted from Mallory’s memoir\, Salt in My Soul. Before her passing\, Mallory launched the social media campaign Lunges4Lungs and raised over $5 million with her parents for research. She passed away at the age of twenty-five on November 15\, 2017\, two months after receiving a double lung transplant. All proceeds from her intellectual property will go to Mallory’s Legacy Fund\, housed at the California Community Foundation. \nTopic: Diary of a Dying Girl by Mallory Smith presented by Diane Shader Smith \nTime: Jun 23\, 2025 03:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82711288665?pwd=yhcYS7oQyyfd4bJohCRDOhDeruvw4z.1 \nMeeting ID: 827 1128 8665 \nPasscode: MALLORY

SUMMARY:Reverse Tashlich - Waterways Clean Up - Family Mitzvah Day!
DESCRIPTION:Calling All Members and Guests! \nPlease join us on Sunday\, September\, 28\, 9:00 AM for a Reverse Tashlich – family friendly mitzvah event to clean our waterways! \nWe will use the kayaks and canoes of the Mariner Program to clean the MBJCC backyard – the Indian Creek Waterway from plastic and other debris! Community Service Hours will be given! \nLifeguards will be on duty! \nVolunteers from the climate and environmental organization VolunteerCleanUp.org. Volunteer Clean Up organization will help out1 This organization is focused building a grassroots movement against marine debris by helping facilitate educational shoreline\, waterway and neighborhood cleanups. \nThis is a program of the Tikkun HaYam – Repair the Sea organization which organizes Reverse Tashlich programs all over the world. \nBring your children and grandchildren! Lifeguards will be on duty. \nA donation of $18 per person is requested (children under 12 are free). MB JCC Lifeguards will be present. Refreshments will be served! (This is a plastic free event – please bring reusable water bottles.  We will have water for refills.) Community Service hours are available. \nA portion of the proceeds support the MBJC Mariners program and our co-sponsor for the day\, VolunteerCleanUp.org\, a non-profit dedicated to sponsoring a grassroots movement for clean beaches\, shorelines and waterways. They will be on hand to assist with nets\, grabbers\, buckets and other equipment. \nWhat is a Reverse Tashlich? \nSponsored by the Jewish organization Tikkun HaYam-Repair the Sea\, the Reverse Tashlich program\, conducted worldwide\, reimagines the High Holiday Tashlich ceremony of symbolically casting away sins into water. The symbolism is reversed: participants come together to clean up waterways that impact our lives\, fostering a spiritual connection to and stewardship for the environment. \nSee you then! \nImportant Reminders for Volunteers: \nFOOD/DRINK:  Please bring water in your own reusable water bottles. We will have coolers for cold water refills but do not provide plastic disposable bottled water. Light refreshments will also be provided \nATTIRE: Dress for a hot day of being in the water on paddle craft. Hat and sunglasses are also recommended for a hot and sunny day. \nWAIVERS: Volunteers must check-in and sign waivers before you start.
