DESCRIPTION:oin us for our virtual FL JCC Author Series with Philip Eil\, Prescription for Pain; How a Once Promising Doctor Became a “Pill Mill Killer” \nThis haunting and propulsive debut follows a journalist’s years-long investigation into his father’s old classmate: former high school valedictorian Paul Volkman\, who once seemed destined for greatness after earning his MD and his PhD from the prestigious University of Chicago\, but is now serving four consecutive life sentences at a federal prison in Arizona. Through this one doctor’s story\, an era of unfathomable tragedy is brought down to a tangible\, and devastating\, human scale. \nPhilip Eil is an award-winning freelance journalist based in Providence\, RI. SUMMARY:Talia Carner - Literary Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:The concluding luncheon for our Barbara Eisenberg Literary Luncheon Series is with best-selling author Talia Carner who will be presenting about her latest historical novel – The Boy With the Star Tattoo on Wednesday\, April 9 at 12:20 pm. \nThis is an epic historical novel of ingenuity and courage\, of love and loss\, spanning postwar France when Israeli agents roamed the countryside to rescue hidden Jewish orphans—to the 1969 daring escape of the Israeli boats of Cherbourg. \nNovelist Talia Carner has authored six historical and psychological suspense novels that shed light on social indignities and unexplored historical events. Both The Boy With The Star Tattoo and The Third Daughter were named Finalists by the Jewish Book Council in the Book Club Categories. Formerly the publisher of Savvy Woman magazine and a lecturer at international women’s economic forums\, Carner turned from trailblazing projects centered on women’s issues to fighting for Israel’s image. SUMMARY:Margalit Fox - Literary Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Best-selling author Margalit Fox will talk about her latest book\, The Talented Mrs. Mandelbaum at the JCC’s Literary Luncheon on Wednesday\, April 9 at 12:30 PM. \nTabloid sensation Fredericka Mandelbaum headed her own crime syndicate in New York City from the 1870s onward\, specializing in “fencing” stolen properties and financing bank burglaries. A penniless immigrant barely twenty years earlier\, Mrs. Mandelbaum entertained a varied crowd at her dining table: politicians and police\, upper-class business leaders and their fashionable wives\, and some of her tonier underworld accomplices. She was a Jewish wife and mother and reportedly an enthusiastic member of her local synagogue. \nAfter being immersed in Mrs. Mandelbaum’s life and times\, readers may decide there’s really no need to explain her success; she was simply one of a kind. It’s a tribute to Fox’s storytelling talents that this unique and mysterious woman has come to life. \nMargalit Fox originally trained as a cellist and a linguist before pursuing journalism. As a senior writer in The New York Times’s Obituary News Department\, she wrote the front-page public sendoffs of some of the leading cultural figures of our age. Winner of the William Saroyan Prize for Literature and author of four previous books\, The Confidence Men\, Conan Doyle for the Defense\, The Riddle of the Labyrinth\, and Talking Hands\, Fox lives in Manhattan with her husband.

SUMMARY:Visages of Memory - Photography Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of a special exhibition opening\, Visages of Memory and a conversation with photographer and Holocaust survivor Laszlo Selly at the Miami Beach Regional Library on Thursday\, April 17th from 6:00-9:00 pm. The exhibition is part of the City of Miami Beach’s Culture Crawl evening. Laszlo will be in conversation at 7:00 pm. \nVisages of Memory\, by Holocaust Survivor Laszlo Selly\, captures the life experience and resilience of the Holocaust Survivors he photographs. Their stories are told through these powerful images. . \nPhotographer Laszlo Selly\, a Holocaust survivor himself\, captured the visages of fellow survivors as seen through his unique lens. \nThe photographs include survivors from Austria\, Czechoslovakia\, Germany\, Hungary\, Poland\, Romania\, and the Soviet Union. Each photograph represents a terrifying story of survival and escape from the Nazis and their eventual migration to the United States. \nThis exhibition is made possible with the support of the University of Miami\, Miami Beach JCC\, and the Holocaust Memorial. \nAbout the Photographer: \nLaszlo Selly and his twin brother were born in Budapest\, Hungary\, on December 31\, 1937\, into a middle-class\, secular Jewish family. When Laszlo was six years old\, he remembered his mother sewing a yellow star onto his outer garments. Desperate to keep their twins safe\, Laszlo’s parents made the difficult decision to send them into hiding. This plan led to danger\, and they returned to their parents. Laszlo’s father obtained a Raoul Wallenberg certificate of protection that allowed the family to move to a safe house. \nAfter liberation by the Soviets\, Laszlo and his twin brother completed their education in Hungary under intense Communist indoctrination. The brothers escaped from Hungary during the 1956 Revolution and made their way to New York where Laszlo became a successful photographer. Today\, he lives with his wife Gail in South Florida and regularly shares his story with students at the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach. \nThe exhibition is part of the Miami Dade Public Library System’s eightieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War\, a pivotal historical moment that continues to resonate profoundly in our global landscape. The Miami-Dade Public Library System proudly presents World War II at 80 – a year-long series honoring historical milestones. Enlightening panel discussions and presentations\, thought-provoking exhibits and book clubs\, along with other insightful events are planned throughout the year. Discover Miami’s role in this informative chapter of history and its ongoing relevance today. \nVisit https://mdpls.org/WWII to learn more and see the schedule of events.

Musical guest Fernando Nissim will lift our spirits with festive Israeli songs\, and guests will have the opportunity to meet featured Israeli artists during a special meet & greet. \nAt 8:30 PM\, we invite you to a film screening and artist talk with Orna Lutski\, offering a poignant perspective on art\, memory\, and healing. \nThis commemorative evening also marks the opening of the special art exhibition: \nMy Home is My Fortress \nPresented in collaboration with Ben Ami Gallery\, Tel Aviv\, and curated by Doron Polak\, the exhibition showcases works by 50 leading Israeli artists—11 of whom are from the “Otef” region along the Gaza border. Created in response to the October 7th attacks and the ongoing conflict\, these deeply personal artworks explore the meaning of home—its loss\, strength\, and enduring significance. \nGallery Directors: Hagit Ben Ami and Daniela Aira\nSupported by: Lourdes Suarez and Isaac Fisher \nLight refreshments will be served.\nWe invite the community to come together for this meaningful experience of unity\, memory\, and hope through culture and art. \n

SUMMARY:FL JCC Virtual Author Event - Karen Fine
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our FL JCC’s Summer Virtual Author Series. \nMonday\, June 9 at 3:30 pm with Karen Fine\, author of The Other Family Doctor. \nA heartwarming memoir about one woman’s career as a vet and the unique role pets play in our lives. Karen Fine always knew that she wanted to be a vet and wasn’t going to let anything stop her: not her allergy to cats\, and not the fact that in the ’80s veterinary medicine was still a mostly male profession. Inspired by her grandfather\, a compassionate doctor who paid house calls to all his (human) patients\, Dr. Fine persevered and brought her Oupa’s principles into her own practice\, which emphasizes the need to understand her patients’ stories to provide the best possible care. \nWoven into Dr. Fine’s story are\, of course\, also the stories of her own pets: the birds\, cats\, and dogs who have taught her the most valuable lessons — how caring for the animals in our lives can teach us to better care for ourselves\, especially when life seems precarious. \nDr. Karen Fine is a holistic veterinarian who is fascinated by the relationships between animals and their people. She is an associate veterinarian at Central Animal Hospital in Leominster\, Massachusetts. For twenty-five years she owned and operated her own house call practice in central Massachusetts. Dr. Fine is certified in veterinary acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society. A leading expert in the emerging field of veterinary narrative medicine\, she has also authored a textbook called Narrative Medicine in Veterinary Practice. \nTopic: The Other Family Doctor with author Karen Fine \nTime: Jun 9\, 2025 03:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82163520787?pwd=MgtvujVa5DldQje3mDGEcLqPjbYU1Z.1 \nMeeting ID: 821 6352 0787 \nPasscode: VET

SUMMARY:FL JCC Virtual Author Event - Diane Shader Smith
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our FL JCC’s Summer Virtual Author Series. \nMonday\, June 23 at 3:30 pm with Diane Shader Smith\, presenting Diary of a Dying Girl\, by Mallory Smith. \nSalt in My Soul is a testament to love\, determination\, and the healing power of memoir as medicine. It’s a classic coming of age story about a young woman named Mallory figuring out how to live fully while dying. In so doing\, she secretly documented her inner thoughts in her diary while throwing herself at life: friendships in elementary school\, boyfriends and sports teams in high school\, the little travel her disease would allow. She attended college and explored the wider world\, one that was just beyond her grasp. She became a devoted environmentalist\, seeing a startling and vivid metaphor for her declining health in the destruction of our world. All the while Mallory fought. And wrote; about her fears\, her loves\, her pain\, her depression\, her hopes\, and gave voice to the many millions who struggle with invisible or visible illness\, turning her pain into purpose. In Mallory’s final days\, her father uncovered a long-forgotten treatment that is now changing the world of medicine but\, heartbreakingly\, it came too late to save his daughter. \nMallory Smith \nMallory Smith was a writer and environmental journalist. A 2014 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University\, Mallory produced radio documentaries for Green Grid Radio and news features for NPR through KCRW. She played club volleyball for Stanford and was a three-sport varsity athlete in high school. Diary of a Dying Girl is adapted from Mallory’s memoir\, Salt in My Soul. Before her passing\, Mallory launched the social media campaign Lunges4Lungs and raised over $5 million with her parents for research. She passed away at the age of twenty-five on November 15\, 2017\, two months after receiving a double lung transplant. All proceeds from her intellectual property will go to Mallory’s Legacy Fund\, housed at the California Community Foundation. \nTopic: Diary of a Dying Girl by Mallory Smith presented by Diane Shader Smith \nTime: Jun 23\, 2025 03:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82711288665?pwd=yhcYS7oQyyfd4bJohCRDOhDeruvw4z.1 \nMeeting ID: 827 1128 8665 \nPasscode: MALLORY
