SUMMARY:Special Film Screening: Ask Dr. Ruth
DESCRIPTION:Join us a very special tribute to Dr. Ruth Westheimer (1928-2024)\, with a screening of a fabulous documentary about her – “Ask Dr. Ruth.” \nFollowing the film presentation\, there will be a panel discussion featuring Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff\, Founder and Director of the Holocaust Teacher’s Institute; Dr. Nikki Freeman\, Education Director at the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach; and Danny Reed\, Cultural Arts Program Coordinator at the Miami Beach JCC. \nAsk. Dr. Ruth \nDirected by Ryan White \nUSA | 100 minutes | 2019 \nAlmost everyone knew America’s most famous sex therapist\, Dr. Ruth Westheimer. With her diminutive frame\, thick German accent\, and uninhibited approach to sex education\, Dr. Ruth revolutionized both public and private conversations around sexuality. But fewer people were aware of her early years as a Holocaust survivor and then a machine gunner in the Israeli army\, fighting during the Independence War. This delightful documentary is an affectionate tribute to a woman whose extraordinary impact on society is matched only by her remarkable life. For the first time\, her story is told with the poignancy and detail it deserves. \nThank you to the Miami Jewish Film Festival and the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach for co-sponsoring this program.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Sunday\, September\, 29\, 9:00 for a family friendly\, morning program on the MBJCC Sol Stern Dock as we use the kayaks and canoes of the Mariner Program to help keep the Indian Creek Waterway clean in a pre-High Holiday – Reverse Tashlich! Volunteers from the climate and environmental organization VolunteerCleanUp.org. \nBring your children and grandchildren! Lifeguards will be on duty. \nA donation of $18 per person is requested (children under 12 are free). MB JCC Lifeguards will be present. SUMMARY:Virtual Author Event: Normon H. Finklestein
DESCRIPTION:The first in a series of author events in conjunction with South Florida JCC’s. \nSaying No to Hate traces the history of American antisemitism and the Jewish community’s response. It offers us a deeper understanding of how events in America’s past have informed the meteoric rise in hatred and violence we see today. \nFinkelstein’s book is not just a narrative of oppression. It also shares how the American Jewish community\, through institutions such as the American Jewish Committee\, the ADL\, and Hillel\, have responded to Jewish hatred. Say No to Hate offers readers an accessible introduction to antisemitism in America. This is particularly important for a generation of Jews who\, until recently\, were shielded from the overt antisemitism that plagued Jewish Americans of years past. \nNorman H. (1941 – 2024) taught Jewish history at Hebrew College for more than thirty-five years and is the author of twenty-one nonfiction histories and biographies. Two of his books\, Heeding the Call and Forged in Freedom\, won National Jewish Book Awards.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition Opening - Hashivenu
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Monday\, October 14\, at 7:30 p.m. for the opening reception of “Hashivenu\,” a very special art exhibition at Miami Beach commemorating October 7 and dedicated to the resilience of Israel and the Jewish people. We will be honoring IDF veterans as well as the Loving Moms organization\, which does so much in the community to fight antisemitism and support the Hostages and Israel. \n“Hashivenu” means “return us.” The “us” is the Jewish people. It is a cry to be renewed while cultivating resilience. It is how the Jewish People have survived for thousands of years and how we will continue to do so. October 7th is firmly embedded in Jewish history as a day of unmitigated tragedy; what has resulted is an expression of “Hashivenu.”  This exhibition honors everyone – those who were murdered\, those who were kidnapped\, those who defend\, and those who renew. \nThis exhibition is made possible with the generous assistance of the Jewish Federations of North America. \nIlan Block is a New Jersey-born artist who creates meaningful and unique digital portraits and art that represent the entire range of the Jewish experience. \nLoving Moms is a Florida-based group of passionate women dedicated to promoting community engagement\, combating antisemitism\, raising awareness about the hostages\, and fostering a supportive environment for those affected.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Event: Binyamin Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our virtual FL JCC Author Series. \nThe Einstein Effect by Binyamin Cohoen shows all the ways\, 70 years after his death\, Albert Einstein’s influence is still with us today — in our systems and our culture. Interspersed between chapters on his long-lasting scientific legacy\, author Benyamin Cohen (the mind behind Einstein’s Twitter account!) also tells the story of how Einstein became an unlikely social media figure and pop culture icon in the modern age. \nBenyamin Cohen is the news director of The Forward\, and has a bizarre side job as Albert Einstein on social media\, where he has 20 million fans. He is the author of The Einstein Effect and My Jesus Year. He’s based in West Virginia\, where he lives with his wife\, three dogs\, a cat\, and a flock of chickens known as the Co-Hens.

SUMMARY:10/7: The Human Story with Lee Yaron
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special evening\, Tuesday\, October 29\, at 7:30 pm for a very special evening in conversation with Israeli Journalist Lee Yaron regarding her book\, 10/7: The Human Story. The definitive account of the 10/7 massacre through the stories of its victims and the communities they called home. \nA masterful work of investigative journalism by acclaimed Haaretz reporter Lee Yaron\, 10/7 chronicles the massacre that ignited a war through the stories of more than 100 civilians. These stories are the products of extensive interviews with survivors\, the bereaved\, and first responders in Israel and beyond. The victims run the gamut from left-wing kibbutzniks and Burning Man-esque partiers to radical right-wingers\, from Bedouins and Israeli Arabs to Thai and Nepalese guest workers\, peace activists\, elderly Holocaust survivors\, refugees from Ukraine and Russia\, pregnant women\, and babies. \nLee Yaron has been a journalist with Haaretz\, Israel’s oldest and most award-winning newspaper\, for nearly a decade. Her investigative reporting has resulted in the founding of state-level commissions and the changing of substantial bodies of Israeli policy and law. She is an elected member-representative of the Executive Committee of the Union of Israeli Journalists. She has also written and directed acclaimed theater productions notable for their use of found materials\, including official governmental texts\, to bring attention to marginalized communities both in Israel and throughout the Middle East. Born in Tel Aviv\, Yaron splits her time between her native city and New York.
