SUMMARY:Lisa Barr & Lauren Grodstein – Barbara Eisenberg Literary Luncheon Series
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a very special Literary Luncheon event with two best selling authors\, Lisa Barr and Lauren Grodstein as they talk about their latestt Warsaw Ghetto themed books\, The Goddess of Warsaw & We Must Not Think of Ourselves\, on Wedenesday\, January 15th at 12:30 pm. \nThe Goddess of Warsaw depicts Bina Blonski and her husband\, Jakub in the Warsaw Ghetto.  cramped into the Warsaw Ghetto along with the rest of the Polish Jewish population. Jakub is a journalist working hard to document all the heartbreaking current events for posterity; Bina\, an actress works for the resistance. \nMeanwhile\, the author turns to 1956 Hollywood to follow the story of actress Lena Browning\, formerly known as Bina\, who is still operating as a spy and assassin. She becomes interested in Operation Paperclip\, a top-secret intelligence program in which high-ranking Nazi scientists are being released from punishment. Next we move to 2006\, when Lena Browning is an old actress\, still known for her perfect face. When Lena finds out that old enemies have survived\, she is moved to work with Sienna\, a fellow actress\, as a means of enacting a final victory over the Nazis. \nThis book is a fast read\, with vivid descriptions of places and time periods. \nWe Must Not Think of Ourselves is based on the story of Emanuel Ringelblum\, who began a secret project at the Warsaw Ghetto in 1941. The project’s name was “Oneg Shabbat” — the pleasure of the Sabbath. Its mission was to record interviews with confined Jews\, collect their testimonies\, archive them\, and preserve them for posterity. The central character is the teacher Adam Paskow\, who participates in this dangerous project and finds love\, risking his life. \nLisa Barr is The New York Times bestselling author of Woman on Fire\, The Unbreakables\, and the award-winning Fugitive Colors. She has served as an editor for The Jerusalem Post\, managing editor of Today’s Chicago Woman and Moment magazine\, and as an editor and reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times. She has appeared on Good Morning America and Today for her work as an author\, journalist\, and blogger. She lives in the Chicago area with her husband and three daughters. \nLauren Grodstein is the author of Our Short History\, The Washington Post Book of the Year The Explanation for Everything\, and The New York Times bestselling A Friend of the Family\, among other works. Her stories\, essays\, and articles have appeared in various literary magazines and anthologies\, and have been translated into French\, German\, Chinese\, and Italian\, among other languages. Her work has also appeared in Elle\, The New York Times\, Refinery29\, Salon.com\, Barrelhouse\, Post Road\, and The Washington Post. She is a professor of English at Rutgers University-Camden\, where she teaches in the MFA program in creative writing.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Event: Normon H. Finklestein
DESCRIPTION:The first in a series of author events in conjunction with South Florida JCC’s. \nSaying No to Hate traces the history of American antisemitism and the Jewish community’s response. It offers us a deeper understanding of how events in America’s past have informed the meteoric rise in hatred and violence we see today. \nFinkelstein’s book is not just a narrative of oppression. It also shares how the American Jewish community\, through institutions such as the American Jewish Committee\, the ADL\, and Hillel\, have responded to Jewish hatred. Say No to Hate offers readers an accessible introduction to antisemitism in America. This is particularly important for a generation of Jews who\, until recently\, were shielded from the overt antisemitism that plagued Jewish Americans of years past. \nNorman H. (1941 – 2024) taught Jewish history at Hebrew College for more than thirty-five years and is the author of twenty-one nonfiction histories and biographies. Two of his books\, Heeding the Call and Forged in Freedom\, won National Jewish Book Awards.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Event: Jonathan Freedland- The Escape Artist
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Freedland’s superb writing fills the reader with rage\, despair\, and admiration for the stubborn resistance of the human spirit. It is heart-wrenching to read the story of Rudolf Vrba\, who is a mere nineteen years of age\, and his fellow concentration camp inmate Fred Wetzler\, who is twenty-six. It is the spring of 1944\, and the two young men are enduring a harrowing incarceration in Auschwitz when the extraordinary happens. Melding their minds and spirits\, they hatch an outrageous plan: They will be the first Jews ever to escape from the highly guarded prison. Once the world knows\, they are certain that steps will be taken to save the Jews in Europe.

SUMMARY:Giola Diliberto - Literary Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Author Gioria Diliberto will present about her latest novel\, Coco at the Ritz\, at the the JCC’s February Literary Luncheon on Wednesday\, February 14 at 12:30 PM. \nThough her name is synonymous with elegance and chic\, the iconic Coco Chanel had a complicated dark side\, and in late August 1944\, as World War II drew to a close\, she was arrested and interrogated on charges of treason to France. What transpired during her interrogation\, who was present\, and why she was set free when so many other women who’d been involved with German men (willingly or otherwise) had their heads shaved or were imprisoned remains a mystery. \nIn this brilliantly insightful and compulsively enjoyable novel from the author of I Am Madame X\, Gioia Diliberto explores the motivations of this complex woman and portrays the gripping battle of wits that could have been her interrogation. Was Chanel truly a collaborator? \nGioia Diliberto is the author of seven books and a play. Her writing\, which focuses on women’s lives\, has been praised for combining rich storytelling\, deep research\, and literary grace. Her books have been translated into several languages\, and she has written for many publications. She also teaches in the writing program at Northwestern University’s School of Professional Studies.

SUMMARY:Sharing Decorating Secrets with Vicente Wolf
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special evening\, Wednesday\, November 1\, at 7:30 p.m. with the author of The Creative Interior Solutions. \nSharing Decorating Secrets with Vicente Wolf with an introduction and Q&A led by Karen Boyer\, founder of Elements in Play Fine Art Advisory \nThe Miami Beach JCC invites you to an engaging chat with interior design trailblazer\, Vicente Wolf. With nearly 50 years in the industry\, he will share myriad inspirations for his designs while walking you through client projects. Known for his relaxed\, elegant environments that incorporate one-of-a-kind pieces with antiques as well as objects found in his travels to remote parts of the world\, his designs maintain a fresh appeal that stands the test of time. From Cuban refugee to a successful designer\, Vicente will discuss personal tales of his experiences as well as design lessons covered in his new book\, CREATIVE INTERIOR SOLUTIONS (Rizzoli; April 2023)\, written by Margaret Russell\, former Editor in Chief of Architectural Digest with a foreword by Marianne Williamson\, a former client and presidential candidate. \nBook signing of his new book will follow the program. \nWhen Vicente Wolf left Cuba and landed in the United States in the 1960s\, he didn’t have a dime to his name or a plan for his life. But he did have an open mind\, a good sense of style\, and a willingness to work hard. \nWhen he discovered interior design in the 1970s\, there were kind mentors who helped him learn the business. In the decades since he’s had a distinguished design career spanning nearly five decades\, opened his VW Home showroom in New York\, written five books\, garnered all kinds of awards\, including having his name included on the AD100 list in 2016\, and earned the undeniable right to be referred to as a “legend.” \nKaren Boyer is a highly regarded art advisor and founder of Elements in Play Fine Art Advisory. She merges passion and strategy to elevate the collections of individuals and families\, ensuring their aesthetic\, financial\, and legacy goals are seamlessly met. Karen is based in Miami and covers the art market internationally. \nThis literary event was made possible with the generous support of Books & Books

SUMMARY:18 Days in October
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special evening at Temple Menorah to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Yom Kippur War with author Uri Kaufman\, who will present his book- 18 Days in October: The Yom Kippur War and How it Created the Modern Middle East. \nIsraeli Consul General Maor Elbaz Starinsky is a special guest for the evening. \nOctober 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War\, a conflict that shaped the modern Middle East. The War was a trauma for Israel and following the oil embargo\, a pivotal reordering of the global economic order. The Jewish State came shockingly close to defeat. A panicky cabinet meeting debated the use of nuclear weapons. After the war\, Prime Minister Golda Meir resigned in disgrace\, and a 9/11-style commission investigated the “debacle.” \nBut\, argues Uri Kaufman\, from the perspective of a half century\, the War can be seen as a pivotal victory for Israel. After nearly being routed\, the Israel Defense Forces clawed its way back to threaten Cairo and Damascus. In the War’s aftermath\, both sides had to accept unwelcome truths: Israel could no longer take military superiority for granted — but the Arabs could no longer hope to wipe Israel off the map. A straight line leads from the battlefields of 1973 to the Camp David Accords of 1978 and all the treaties since.
