SUMMARY:One Woman Show - "That's (Not) How You Walk On Stage"
DESCRIPTION:The Miami Beach JCC\, in partnership with the Great Miami Jewish Federation\, is excited to present a program for Jewish Disability Awareness\, Acceptance\, and Inclusion Month (JDAIM). \n” When I was an infant the doctors told my parents “Unfortunately\, there’s nothing more we can do. She’ll walk until she can’t walk anymore. And then – a wheelchair”. My one-woman show “That’s (Not) How You Walk On Stage” tells my story as a triplet born with Cerebral Palsy and reveals my journey of coping\, challenges\, failures\, and victories living with this disability. ” \nGrowing up in Israel while battling her physical challenges and societal judgments\, Maayan’s journey is a powerful exploration of acceptance and pursuing one’s dreams. She’ll discuss her desire to be accepted for who she is\, walk her path\, stand on her own feet\, and pursue her passion for acting without being told how to do it.

SUMMARY:Lauren Belfer - Literary Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:RSVP \n“How many lives can you imagine yourself living?”So Hannah Larson wonders. When a close relative falls ill\, Hannah and her young son\, Nicky\, decide to join him for the summer at Ashton Hall\, a historic manor house outside Cambridge\, England. Hannah gave up her academic career to raise her beloved child\, who is neurodivergent and experiences the world differently from others\, and she’s grateful to escape her life in New York City\, where her marriage has been upended by a devastating betrayal. \nSoon after their arrival\, ever-curious Nicky discovers the skeletal remains of a woman in a forgotten\, walled-off wing of the manor\, and Hannah is pulled into an all-consuming quest for answers. Rich with passion\, strength\, and ferocity across the ages\, Ashton Hall is a novel that reveals how the most profound hauntings are within ourselves. \nLauren Belfer toured extensively for the Jewish Book Council with her novel And After the Fire\, which won the National Jewish Book Award. Her debut novel\, City of Light\, was a New York Times bestseller. A Fierce Radiance was a Washington Post Best Novel. Ashton Hall was recommended by The New York Times Book Review. SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Chag HaSigd The Festival of Sigd with Israeli Shaliach Yehuda Michael
DESCRIPTION:On Sigd\, Ethiopian Jews pray to God and plead for a return to Zion\, the land of the Torah\, and specifically Jerusalem. The community engages in introspection and reflection – in addition to the individual self-examination of Yom Kippur\, this reflects and focuses on joint communal behavior. \nThere are no written sources about the origins of Ethiopian Jews and the historical time they came to Ethiopia. For the most part\, history has been preserved orally and has been passed down from generation to generation. The journey of Ethiopian Jews through \nSudan is one of the historical\, important\, and special journeys of the Jewish people in general and of the Ethiopian community in particular. It is intertwined with longings for the Land of Zion\, an aspiration to lize an old dream of immigrating to Jerusalem\, to build and understand it\, and to unite with the Jewish people in our country. Most Ethiopian Jews immigrated to Israel in two major operations. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lisa Barr & Lauren Grodstein – Barbara Eisenberg Literary Luncheon Series
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a very special Literary Luncheon event with two best selling authors\, Lisa Barr and Lauren Grodstein as they talk about their latestt Warsaw Ghetto themed books\, The Goddess of Warsaw & We Must Not Think of Ourselves\, on Wedenesday\, January 15th at 12:30 pm. \nThe Goddess of Warsaw depicts Bina Blonski and her husband\, Jakub in the Warsaw Ghetto.  cramped into the Warsaw Ghetto along with the rest of the Polish Jewish population. Jakub is a journalist working hard to document all the heartbreaking current events for posterity; Bina\, an actress works for the resistance. \nMeanwhile\, the author turns to 1956 Hollywood to follow the story of actress Lena Browning\, formerly known as Bina\, who is still operating as a spy and assassin. She becomes interested in Operation Paperclip\, a top-secret intelligence program in which high-ranking Nazi scientists are being released from punishment. Next we move to 2006\, when Lena Browning is an old actress\, still known for her perfect face. When Lena finds out that old enemies have survived\, she is moved to work with Sienna\, a fellow actress\, as a means of enacting a final victory over the Nazis. \nThis book is a fast read\, with vivid descriptions of places and time periods. \nWe Must Not Think of Ourselves is based on the story of Emanuel Ringelblum\, who began a secret project at the Warsaw Ghetto in 1941. The project’s name was “Oneg Shabbat” — the pleasure of the Sabbath. Its mission was to record interviews with confined Jews\, collect their testimonies\, archive them\, and preserve them for posterity. The central character is the teacher Adam Paskow\, who participates in this dangerous project and finds love\, risking his life. \nLisa Barr is The New York Times bestselling author of Woman on Fire\, The Unbreakables\, and the award-winning Fugitive Colors. She has served as an editor for The Jerusalem Post\, managing editor of Today’s Chicago Woman and Moment magazine\, and as an editor and reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times. She has appeared on Good Morning America and Today for her work as an author\, journalist\, and blogger. She lives in the Chicago area with her husband and three daughters. \nLauren Grodstein is the author of Our Short History\, The Washington Post Book of the Year The Explanation for Everything\, and The New York Times bestselling A Friend of the Family\, among other works. Her stories\, essays\, and articles have appeared in various literary magazines and anthologies\, and have been translated into French\, German\, Chinese\, and Italian\, among other languages. Her work has also appeared in Elle\, The New York Times\, Refinery29\, Salon.com\, Barrelhouse\, Post Road\, and The Washington Post. She is a professor of English at Rutgers University-Camden\, where she teaches in the MFA program in creative writing.
